Golden Globe Nominees! The HFPA Strikes Again!

It's a big day and a much needed boon for The King's Speech, whilst True Grit was completely shut out. I have a feeling the film was simply not screened for them, but then again, this mysterious group of European "critics" (seriously, WHO the fuck ARE they?) weren't likely to jump a western's bones. But really what effect does this all have on the race? Not much, by my count of the last few years. In any case, fun to watch, but meaningless nonetheless.

Positives:

. Inception in for Picture, Director, and Screenplay.

. Black Swan in for Picture, Director, Actress, and Supporting Actress

. The Social Network in for Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Screenplay, and score

. Bale in for Supporting Actor

. Blue Valentine in for Actor and Actress

. 127 Hours in for Actor and Screenplay

The rest is underwhelming, but not bad. The Comedy/Musical categories are laughable. Welcome to Starfuckers Inc. folks. Seriously, anyone who takes the HFPA seriously again is delusional. Fun, but meaningless.

Why are the musical/comedy categories "laughable"? Other than Burlesque, the other movies belong in that category. I guess since there weren't any real musicals out this year, they had to squeak in one that was close to that definition. I mean, would we rather have a Tyler Perry "comedy" in the list?

Other choices that I'm glad didn't make the list: Date Night, Cop Out, MacGruber, Grown Ups, Dinner for Schmucks, etc. I think in place of Burlesque, they should have put Morning Glory there, because Burlesque isn't that much of a musical and MG is actually funny. B is more "songs in a movie" than a true musical anyway.

I liked The Tourist and very surprised (because of the bashing by most critics) that it got a nomination. I'm not surprised that they liked his Frank Tupelo because it's actually hard for Depp be play normal since he's not. I mean that in the most complimentary way posible, too.

It's laughable because of all the quality comedy films they snubbed in favor of sucking up to Hollywood.

Easy A
Get Him to the Greek
Four Lions
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

All four are much much better than

The Tourist
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
Red

It just kind of solidifies this group as a joke.
